Addressing an Ageing Malaysia

A STAR report back in 25 of July made by B.K. Sidhu illustrated concerns of various G20 countries dealing with aged their aged population. As a whole, they seem unprepared to adequately deal with their ageing populace, especially in providing inclusive social structures and institutions for older adults as they age especially in a time where the elderly can no longer rely on traditional family support systems or strained pension funds to aid them in their senior years as the country develops.

Current statistics in Malaysia on the other hand shows that its working age sector of 15-64 years old has decreased to 69.7% from 69.8% compared to 2019 and the senior population aged 65 and older have increased to 7% from 6.7% last year. Much like these G20 countries, we too have to ensure that our healthcare systems adapt to the needs of older adults as they age, while also promoting inclusion and ensuring individual economic security.
